Where is the Gillingham HGV test centre?

The DVSA test centre in Gillingham is the lorry and bus test centre serving Kent, and it is where your practical HGV or PCV test will be taken. Why does it matter that I train on the Gillingham test routes?

Because unfamiliar roads cost people marks. The junctions, roundabouts and gradients around a test centre have their own character, and knowing which ones need an early gear change or a wider line removes a whole layer of guesswork on the day. You should be thinking about your driving, not about what is round the next corner.

What happens on the day of an HGV practical test?

The test runs to a set structure: vehicle safety questions, the reversing exercise in the manoeuvring area, an uncoupling and recoupling exercise if you are taking Class 1 (C+E), then roughly an hour of on-road driving covering a range of road types. The examiner assesses control, observation and judgement throughout. You will have done every element in training before you do it under test conditions.

What catches most people out on the HGV test?

The reversing exercise is the one candidates worry about most, and the usual causes of a fault are rushing it and not using the mirrors early enough rather than any lack of skill. After that it tends to be observation at junctions and positioning on roundabouts, where a lorry needs a different line to a car. All three are practice problems, not talent problems, which is why we drill them.

How do I book an HGV test at Gillingham?
