Do I Need a Medical to Drive an HGV? What You Must Know Before You Apply

If you are thinking about becoming a professional lorry driver in the UK, one of the first things you will need to do is pass a medical examination. Whether you are applying for a Category C, C1, or CE licence, the HGV medical is a legal requirement and must be completed before the DVLA will process your provisional licence application.

In this guide, we break down everything you need to know about the HGV medical, what the process involves, where to get it done in Kent, and how Learn2Pass makes the process easy and stress-free.

Who Needs an HGV Medical?

If you are applying for your first provisional HGV licence, or if you are renewing your licence after the age of 45, then you must undergo a medical examination.

This applies to anyone looking to drive:

  • Category C (Class 2)
  • Category C1 (7.5-tonne vehicle)
  • Category CE (Class 1)
  • Category D (bus/coach)

Even if you are upgrading from Class 2 to Class 1, the DVLA will require a valid medical if your previous one has expired.

What Does the HGV Medical Involve?

The HGV medical is a basic health check carried out by a registered doctor or GP. It takes around 15 to 30 minutes and involves:

  • Medical history review: You will be asked about past and current conditions (e.g. diabetes, epilepsy, sleep disorders, vision or hearing issues).
  • Vision test: You must meet the legal eyesight standard, both with and without corrective lenses.
  • Blood pressure reading: High blood pressure may lead to a failed medical unless controlled.
  • Neurological and cardiovascular checks: The doctor will assess your fitness to drive professionally and rule out any serious health risks.

What Is the D4 Medical Form?

The D4 form is the official DVLA document that your doctor must complete and sign during your medical. It covers your physical and mental fitness, and includes your test results and doctor’s observations.

You can download the D4 form directly from the DVLA website, or Learn2Pass can provide one and help you fill it in before your appointment.

Once completed, you send it to the DVLA along with your provisional licence application (D2 form).
