What is CPC Training? A Clear Guide for New HGV Drivers in Kent

If you are looking to become a professional lorry or bus driver, there is one phrase you will come across very early on: CPC training. But what exactly is it, and why is it so important?

In this post, we will break down exactly what CPC training is, who needs it, what it includes, and how you can get started with Learn2Pass, Kent’s trusted HGV training provider based in Gillingham.

Whether you are starting from scratch or upgrading your licence, this guide will ensure you are fully prepared for the road ahead.

What is CPC Training?

CPC stands for Certificate of Professional Competence. It is a legal requirement for anyone who wants to drive a lorry, bus or coach professionally in the UK.

You cannot drive for hire or reward without it. Think of it as your passport to professional driving.

Who Needs CPC Training?

There are two main types of CPC:

Initial CPC

If you are a new driver or have never held a Driver CPC before, you will need to complete the Initial CPC. This includes:

  • Module 2: Case Studies Test at a theory test centre
  • Module 4: Practical Demonstration Test at an approved site (like ours)

These modules come after your theory and practical licence tests and are essential for commercial driving.

Periodic CPC

If you already have a CPC or are returning to driving, you will need to complete 35 hours of periodic training every 5 years. This keeps your qualification active and ensures you are up to date with road safety, regulations and best practices.

What is Included in Initial CPC Training?

At Learn2Pass, we make CPC training straightforward. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Module 2 Preparation: Our digital resources and mock tests help you pass first time
  • Module 4 Training: Delivered by expert instructors using real vehicles and real equipment
  • Test Booking Support: We handle your test bookings and paperwork
  • Flexible Options: Evening and weekend training available
  • Local Training: All training happens in Gillingham, Kent — where you will take your DVSA tests

We make it easy. You focus on learning, we take care of the rest.

Do I Need CPC if I Already Have a Licence?

Yes, if you want to drive for work. Even if you passed your lorry test years ago, you still need a valid CPC to work professionally.

The only exception is if you are driving for personal use or under certain exemption rules (for example, driving within a depot or transporting non-commercial goods). But for most drivers looking to work in haulage or logistics, CPC is essential.
