Which HGV Licence Do I Need? Class 1 vs Class 2 Explained for Kent Drivers

Unsure which HGV licence to choose? Find out the difference between Class 1 and Class 2 and what works best in Kent.

Which HGV Licence Do I Need? Class 1 vs Class 2 Explained for Kent Drivers

What is an HGV Licence?

HGV stands for Heavy Goods Vehicle. To legally drive any large lorry in the UK, you need to hold the correct category on your licence. There are two main types:

  • Class 2 (Category C)
  • This licence lets you drive rigid vehicles over 3.5 tonnes. These vehicles have a fixed cab and trailer body — they do not bend in the middle. Think tipper trucks, refuse lorries and standard delivery vehicles.
  • Class 1 (Category CE)
  • This licence covers articulated vehicles, which include a cab and a separate trailer connected by a pivot point. These are often used for long-distance haulage, including supermarket and freight trucks.

What is the Difference Between Class 1 and Class 2?

The difference is mainly in size, design, and complexity.

Class 1 jobs often come with higher earning potential, but Class 2 is easier to start with and ideal for building confidence on the road. Most Kent-based logistics companies hire for both, especially around Gillingham and the Medway towns.

Which Licence Should You Start With?

You can technically train for either licence first, but most learners start with Class 2. It is simpler, more accessible, and still opens the door to thousands of driving jobs. After gaining experience, you can then upgrade to Class 1 through a short additional course.

At Learn2Pass, many learners begin their careers with Class 2 training at our Gillingham base and return within a year to add Class 1 once they have some real-world driving hours under their belt.

Learn2Pass Recommendations

We train hundreds of learners across Kent every year and here is what we usually advise:

  • Start with Class 2 if you are new to HGV driving
  • Go straight to Class 1 if you are confident, want to maximise earnings, and are ready for more advanced vehicles
  • Choose our Full Bundle if you want medical, CPC, theory, practical and both licences in one streamlined package

Our training takes place in and around the Gillingham DVSA test centre, which means you will be practising on the exact routes used for testing. This local familiarity gives our learners a huge advantage.

Common FAQs About HGV Licence Types

Can I go straight to Class 1 without doing Class 2 first?

Yes, you can. However, most drivers prefer to do Class 2 first as it builds confidence and is less demanding for beginners.

Is there a big difference in cost?

Class 1 training is slightly more expensive, but we offer affordable packages and finance options. We also match any written quote, ensuring you get the best value in Kent.

Do I need to pass a medical first?

Yes, a DVLA medical is required before starting either licence. Learn2Pass includes this in most full bundles.

Which licence gets me a job faster in Kent?

Class 2 roles are more widely available locally, especially with delivery, waste and trade companies. Class 1 is better for national haulage.
