Driver CPC Module 2: The Case Study Test Explained

Module 2 is the Driver CPC case study test: seven real-world scenarios, around 50 questions between them, and a pass mark of 40 out of 50. You sit it on a computer at a theory test centre, usually in the same visit as your theory test.

It is the fairest test in the whole process, because there is almost nothing to learn by heart. It is also the one experienced drivers most often fail, for a reason worth understanding before you book.

What a case study looks like

Each case study sets out a situation in a short piece of text, sometimes with a picture or a document such as a delivery note or a tachograph readout. Then it asks a handful of questions about what you would do.

Across the seven case studies there are around 50 questions in total. The formats vary — multiple choice, picking several correct answers, and sometimes a short typed response.

What the scenarios cover

The scenarios are drawn from the working day, not from a textbook:

Drivers' hours and rest. A planner or a customer pushing you past your limits, and what you are actually allowed to do about it. Our drivers' hours guide covers the underlying rules.

Load security. A load that has shifted, or a vehicle that might be over on an axle.

Vehicle defects found on a walkaround, and which ones stop you driving.

Vulnerable road users, blind spots and manoeuvring in built-up areas.

Emergencies, incident procedure and making a scene safe.

Documentation and tachograph records, including what to do when something is missing.

Fuel-efficient driving and handling difficult customers professionally.

Why experienced drivers fail it

Because they answer with what happens in the yard rather than what the rules require.

Module 2 is written from the point of view of a professional who says no when saying no is the correct answer. When two options both look defensible, the one that is safest and most legally correct is the one that scores — not the one that keeps the customer happy or gets the load delivered.

The second most common mistake is reading the questions before the scenario. Details early in a case study — a time, a weight, a note about the weather — change the right answer later on. Read the whole thing first.

Practising for it

There is no official question bank to memorise, which is the point. What helps is working through realistic scenarios and understanding the reasoning, particularly around hours, load security and defect reporting.
